There is a report that the New York Giants have shown “serious interest” in signing the former New England running back, Shane Vereen.

The Giants running game needs some improvement. With Rashad Jennings set to turn 30 this season, the Giants are searching for a running back to fill his role in the near future. Last season, Jennings only played 11 games due to injuries and the Giants were forced to give rookie running back Andre Williams, a huge workload.

Vereen, a pass-catching running back, gained 828 total yards and 5 touchdowns in 2014. The running back would likely compliment Andre Williams well, as the Giants like to run a two-back system with a pass catching back and a ground back. The move would bolster the running back core as the Giants are just a year removed from signing anyone they could find to play running back for them (*cough Peyton Hillis, Michael Cox..).

Giants fans would not mind seeing Vereen in blue and white next season for the GMEN but, it has to be for the right price. The Giants currently have the 9th fewest amount cap room in the league with $12 million in cap space. The hope for this off season is that the Giants would sign quarterback Eli Manning and Prince Amukamara, to a contract extension. The move would likely save the Giants cap room to spend more in free agency to strengthen their defense.

Buckle your seat belts boys and girls because free agency starts today at 4 pm ET
